Copper product maintenance

Maintenance Information for Copper Products

Our copper products are made from 16 gauge pure Copper and treated with a clear varnish sealant to protect both the patina and the copper surface. However, even the strongest lacquer cannot replace responsible care. Please follow the instructions below to ensure the longevity and beauty of your copper products.

Cleaning:

  • Regular Cleaning: Use a mild, non-acidic liquid detergent or soap with warm water and a soft, non-abrasive cotton cloth. We recommend a pH-balanced liquid dish soap like Ivory, avoiding harsh detergents like Dawn or Palmolive.
  • Deeper Cleaning: For occasional disinfecting, use a non-abrasive, non-corrosive cleaner such as diluted Simple Green.
  • Post-Use Care: Wipe down your copper hood, sink or tub after each use with a soft cloth to remove excess water. This will help prevent water spots and streaks from forming on the surface.

Maintenance:

  • Waxing: Wax your copper product every 3-6 months (depending on usage) to maintain its appearance. We recommend beeswax or honey wax products such as Flitz Fixture and Faucet Wax. Apply with a soft, clean cloth and buff with a non-abrasive cloth.
  • Wax Over Lacquer: Wax can be applied over the lacquer finish regularly to enhance the appearance and extend the life of the lacquer sealant.
  • Scratches: If a scratch penetrates the lacquer, it can cause the underlying copper to patina. A light application of KRYLON Clear Sealer can be used to re-seal the scratched surface.

Things to Avoid:

  • Harsh Cleaners: Do not use abrasive materials, copper polish, acidic cleaners (e.g., Comet, Soft Scrub), or harsh chemicals such as acetone. These can damage the lacquer finish.
  • Hot Pots/Pans: Avoid placing hot pans or pots directly from the stove/oven into the copper sink. Allow them to cool down before use.
  • Acidic Foods: Do not leave acidic foods sitting on the copper surface for long periods.
  • Rubber Mats: While rubber mats can be used during dishwashing, remove them immediately after use. Do not leave them in the sink.

Important Notes:

  • Patina Change: your copper sink or hood will develop a richer, warmer patina over time. This is a natural process and make it unique, and the lacquer finish will prevent the copper from turning green.
  • Handcrafted Variations: As all copper products are individually handcrafted, slight variations in patina, texture, and dimensions are normal.

By following these care guidelines, your copper product will retain its beauty for years to come. Thank you for choosing our handcrafted copper pieces! If you need any further assistance, please reach out to us via email: info@eliterangehood.com.
